The government has announced that the salary of the Chief Executive, and politically appointed officials, will be restored to levels last seen before 2009, when there was 5.38 per cent cut due to the harsh economic climate.

Payments made to ExCo members will also be restored to pre-2009 levels. Earlier lawmakers approved a longstanding funding request by the government for 8.9 billion dollars to raise the salary of civil servants. It will be back-paid from last April.

Senior civil servants will get a rise of 5.96 per cent -- and those in the low and middle ranks, 4.71 per cent.

LegCo's Finance Committee approved the request after pan-democrats stopped filibustering.
